A review of the debut album by 90s R&B group "Jodeci" that was a quarantine listening experience.
It's all right.
Jodeci is a quartet R&B group that has revolutionized R&B music in various ways from their street imagery as a quartet ditching the well-groomed or pretty boy look in favor of looking like rappers that sing. They even changed the lyrical content of R&B music by singing about their explicit exploits about love, sex, and romance. Their debut album is about 60% of what they would become and I believe is a good introduction to who Jodeci is.
Forever My Lady is a 13-track project that clocks in at 53 minutes and 32 seconds.
Songs like "Stay” - Third Single, "Come & Talk To Me” - Fourth Single, "Forever My Lady” - Second Single, "I'm Still Waiting” - Fifth Single, "U & I", "Interlude - (553 - Nasty)", "My Phone", "It's All Right", and "X's We Share" are to be the strongest tracks on the project with the tracks "U & I", "My Phone", and "X's We Share" should've been contenders for singles at the time of the project’s release.
Other tracks like "Gotta Love” - Lead Single, "Play Thang”, and "Treat U", were "meh" and were too "new jack swing-y" for me compared to the tracks like "My Phone" and "It's Alright" which displayed a healthy balance with the new jack swing style at the time and the groups signature style. The song "Cherish ",in my opinion, doesn't fit on the project. Also, the interlude track "Interlude - (553 - Nasty)" should've been the opening track.
The album's strong point is when the group sticks to the R&B ballads while again it suffers when they delve into the new jack swing stuff, which is one problem I have with the project. Another problem I have with this project is the generic lyrical content that is typical by modern standards and a little unique when the project was first released. The sex, love, and romance theme is just played out because of its long staple in the genre. Also, the project isn't imaginative at all except for the instrumentals but is overall an okay project as a debut for the group.

Regardless of the score, I think Jodeci is still a pretty good group overall.
